Helen Rose

Helen Rose is one of my two favorite designers of all time! Although her birthday was slightly over a month ago I've decided to do a post in her honor anyhow! :)

If you're not familiar with Helen Rose here are a few of her designs you may have seen.....

Elizabeth Taylor in A Date With Judy
Grace Kelly in High Society
Princess Grace Kelly's wedding gown

Jane Powell in A date With Judy

interesting fact: Helen Rose began designing professionally at age 15!!! Or possibly 16. (That would be me starting professioinally right now! That would be a dream!)
I've read that Helen was interested in fashion from the time she was very little (her mother was a seamstress) and that after she finished most her school she was sent to an art school.
After marrying husband Harry Rose, Helen went to work for 20th Century Fox but soon switched to MGM.

Helen Roses style was terribly feminine and pretty much perfect!
Other than Princess Grace's wedding dress, Rose designed for a few other famous weddings...

Elizabeth Taylors
Debbie Reynolds

and Jane Powells....

intersting fact: Helen Rose liked designing current costumes better than period. She was often accused of inaccurate period designs.

The swan was one of the movies that Rose was accused of doing inaccurately. Though she said it was her favorite period piece she had ever done.

This is quite understandable! They're gorgeous! :)

Don't you think?

Sorry that this post is so little. I've found its very hard to get good information about Helen Rose. However in 1976 she wrote a book, "Just Make Them Beautiful: the world of a designing woman,"
Which is both a biography and it highlights some of her designs!

Helen Rose was born on Feb 2nd, 1904, Died Nov 9th, 1985. Happy late birthday!
the costumes below were all designed by Helen Rose.

  2. Yes, it from The Tender Trap. I wasn't crazy over the movie but the costumes were all so pretty. You watched it with us didn't you?
