Tips from Edith Heads, "How To Dress For Success." Some of Edith's advice may be dated but that makes all the more fun to read!
"Remember, it is always fashionable to look your best."
according to my hair, skin type, and eye color these are the colors that look best on me.....
other colors that look good on me are.....acording to Edith Heads color test.
Edith explains that if you a shorter person (which is me) who is trying to achieve a taller look do not wear a skirt and a shirt (as opposed to a dress) because the break in between makes you look shorter. Also that if you must wear a skirt and blouse, try not use different colors (like the picture above) but instead use one soloid color. The opposite of which is also true. If you are a taller person trying to achieve a shorter look then you may want to wear a skirt and blouse instead of a dress and use varying colors.
On closet orginazation, Edith uses some of the stars for examples......
"You might well take a tip from some of the stars on the organization of your closet. Julie Andrews, for instance, has her wardrobe arranged almost like stock in a department store. Each classification (day clothes, sports clothes, afternonn and evening clothes) is hung together and seperated by a divider. Her accessories are labeled as to what they go with accorsing to a master chart on the back of her closet door. Dressing in a hurry, she selects her costume , then refers to the chart and knows immediately which shoe, bag, hat, gloves and jewelry to wear with it. Debbie Reynolds has another method. Her closet door has a blackboard on the inside where she keeps a day-to-day list of things to be mended, altered, cleaned, put away or purchased."
On dressing right to get the job Edith suggests.....
To get the job you want in the field you feel best equipped for, spend some time finding out about it. Learn all you can about it by reading , asking questioins, following the business notes in the daily newspaper, and by getting your hands on some of the trade papers and magazines read by the people in that field.....The moer you know about the type of business you want to become part of, the more intelligently you will be able to handle the interview you eventually get.....All this information, plus the how you are dressed for your interview, will stand you in very good stead and help your chances for getting the job you want"
It's effects are both Elegant, and Slimming.... |
According to Edith the colors to wear if you want to look Elegant are: "quiet beiges, heathery tones of gray, white, off-white and of course basic black."
If you want to look Young: "sweet, innocent pastels-pink, blue, yellow-plus bright red and navy blue."
If you want to look Slim, these are the Slimming colors: black, dark sable brown, charcoal gray or navy blue."
If you want to look Exciting, here are the Excitement colors: "orange, cappucine, peacock, and persian blue, emerald, chartruse, purple, red and Shocking Pink."
"Accesories play a tremendously important part in building a wardrobe to live in. The woman who has all those shoes in her closet and nothign to wear them with is a prime example of bad planning. No one needs a pair of shoes for every costume, and a well planned wardrobe is color co-ordinated so that one set of basic accessories (handbags, shoes and gloves) can be worn with a number of dresses or suits.
As far as basic accessories are concerned, if you had no others you could survive ver nicely and dress succesfully for everything but the most formal occasion, with these:
Gloves : Leather or Fabric Shorties - dark, white or bone. 6-or 8 button --- dark, white, beige or bone,
Jewelry:
Pearls: single-strand / matinee length necklace / earrings
Tailored Gold: Necklace / button or drop earrings/ bracelet / One handsome pin or clip that can be worn on suits, dresses or coats (preferably unmatching so they go together, but don't look like a set)
Handbags and Shoes: Black or Leather / beige or bone (will go with anything.) Low-heeled sports shoe and tote bag in a neutral or luggage shade / Medium-heeled conservative black dress shoes with matching leather bag
Frippery: Several attractive scarfs to add color and dash to necklines or to wear in your hair when neccessary"
Oh great, i'm short and one of the main things I wear are skirts and shirts that aren't the same color!

ReplyDeleteGreat post, Alex! Love the info on the stars closets :)
ReplyDeleteHey Alex - that's so cool that you've read Edith Head's book! I'd love to get my hands on a copy of it sometime ... she had such amazing and insightful advice!
ReplyDeleteThanks also for your sweet comment on my blog! An otolaryngologist (also known as an ENT doctor) is a doctor who mostly treats diseases of the ears, nose, and throat - "oto-" means ear, "laryngo-" means throat, and then they also treat noses. :-)
I'm so thankful for your prayers! Let me know if there's anything I can pray for you, too!
Love,
Vicki
